Teeth Whitening

This is possible with dentist-administered tooth whitening options. Tooth whitening options are available in several forms but those provided by dental professionals offer faster results.

Tooth whitening is a common cosmetic dental procedure. It allows you to brighten your smile under your dentist’s care. The process starts with a consultation and examination to determine which procedure is right for you.

We’re pleased to offer tooth whitening services here at First City Dental in Saint John, New Brunswick. Let’s talk more about what you can expect from this procedure.

What is tooth whitening?

Tooth whitening improves the appearance of your teeth by making them brighter, resulting in greater self-confidence.

Tooth whitening can be done through bleaching at the dental office or home, or by using over-the-counter products whitening toothpastes.

How does tooth whitening at the dental office work?

In-office tooth whitening procedures take up to 1 hour. Your dentist applies a bleaching agent to your teeth and activates it with the help of a laser or light.

Exposure to the laser may last for up to 20 minutes. After which, your dentist applies another coat of bleach, and the cycle may be repeated for up to 4 rounds, depending on your treatment plan.

The hydrogen peroxide or whitening agent is usually stronger than those in over-the-counter tooth whitening products. Your dentist can also adjust the dose, which making the procedure more effective in achieving the results you want.

Here in our office we examine your mouth first as a safety precaution. During the procedure, we use a mouthpiece to help you keep your mouth open.

We apply a gel to your inner cheeks and lips to shield them from the bleaching agent. We also place a rubber dam to separate your gums from your teeth and reduce potential sensitivity after the procedure.

Once the procedure is done, we may also provide you with an at-home tooth whitening kit to maintain the shade of your teeth. This kit includes a custom mouthpiece and a gel with the bleaching agent.

Usage instructions may vary per individual. But since you’re using the kit by yourself, the strength of the bleach is also usually milder for safety purposes. Your dentist lets you know how to use them properly for best results.

Does tooth whitening have side effects?

Tooth sensitivity is a common side effect after a tooth whitening procedure but is usually temporary. It helps to avoid extremely hot or cold beverages to manage sensitivity.

Let your dentist know if you already experience tooth sensitivity so they can adjust the amount of hydrogen peroxide in your bleaching solution.

Can children get their teeth whitened?

Teens who may express interest in the procedure should receive guidance from their dentist.

There are several reasons why the teeth appear darker. For instance, it may be due to fluorosis or excessive fluoride. That said, tooth whitening may not be the right solution for everyone.

Also, whitening the teeth if both primary and adult are present can result in an uneven shade.
